Spiral Hair Jewels – Quick & Easy Updo Upgrade

Styling your hair in an updo without the help of a hairdresser can be quite the daunting task. I say this even after my years spent behind the chair – I still would only attempt an elaborate updo on my own with carefully managed expectations (you can see some of my favorite hair tutorials here, here and here).

I came across these spiral hair jewels (for lack of a better word) at H&M a few weeks back. I’d share a link, but unfortunately they don’t seem to be listed on H&M’s website anywhere. There are some very similar alternatives if you’re interested: here and here. The set I purchased included six spiral hair jewels.

For the look you see pictured above, I simply wrapped my ponytail around a hair donut and secured with hair pins. Then, one by one, I spun each hair spiral into the bun in a clockwise motion. That’s it! (See this post for more detailed instructions on using a hair donut in an updo – it’s really quite simple.)

While they may be a bit much for an average day, the hair spirals could be an excellent solution for a bride planning to do her own hair on the big day. And you can’t go wrong for less than $5 for a set of six.

Please let us know in the comments if you’ve tried a similar—or better—product to easily upgrade an updo?

Very pretty, do you have to have thick hair for them to stay in place?

I wish I could see how you actually apply the jewel spirals. I can’t imagine it, do you take sections of hair and individually wrap around the spiral thingy? Sorry to be so dense. :)

Hi Yaya! Not a dense question at all! Inserting the spirals is incredibly simple. My hair was already up and in the bun. OK, so the spiral is kind of in the shape of a Hershey’s kiss. You place the base of the spiral (the circular bottom of the Hershey Kiss) flatly wherever on the bun you want. Press gently and spin (I did all of mine in a clockwise motion so it would be easy to remember the opposite way to spin them for removal). As you spin, the coil spirals into your hair until you just see the jewel resting on the surface. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

Oh thank you for your prompt reply! It sounds so easy, so you don’t have to wrap hair sections around it, you just press down on spiral and spin clockwise. Now I think I get it. Will definitely want to try them. I will look up that H&M site now. Thank you so much for your help!

No problem! Yes, there is no need to wrap hair sections at all, I don’t think that would work. I couldn’t find them on the H&M website, but they were in the store. If you don’t have luck you could try Amazon (see here and here.) Best of luck!
